We scored 6 food diary and calorie counting apps aimed at consumers on 18 metrics. The key question: are the monthly and annual price, the limits of the free version and how to cancel the subscription stated clearly before subscribing?
Nutrition and calorie tracking apps are a popular way to track eating, count calories and macros and keep a food diary on a phone. The biggest problem for the consumer is pricing transparency: some apps show the monthly and annual price directly on the website, while many hide the price behind the app store or an onboarding questionnaire. We scored six apps used in Finland with a transparent formula where the key question is: are the price, the limits of the free version and cancellation of the subscription stated clearly before subscribing.
Monthly and annual price publicly shown in euros without logging in (30), limits of the free version and differences of the paid version stated (20), automatic renewal and cancellation of the subscription stated (15), Finnish-language content or application interface available (15), owning company stated on the site (20)
Transparency is 30% of the total points · these metrics make up its 100 points · the full formula and the other pillars
How to read the comparison correctly: Score measures how openly a company publishes its prices, terms and contact details, not what kind of service it gives its customers. Clear differences in points indicate a genuine difference: one states the price immediately, another only after logging in. Close scores should not be read as a ranking order, because every measurement has a margin of variation. The measurement accuracy and the entire calculation formula have been laid open in the methodology.
Customer experience is brought into the assessment separately. We also collect customer feedback and customer experiences about the companies through separate surveys. The results will be added later to the overall assessment, so that the Score tells not only about transparency but also about how customers experience the company's service.
All the apps are foreign. There were no Finnish nutrition apps in this comparison. The owning company is stated openly for each one: American, German, Swedish, Canadian or Polish.
Pricing is the clearest pain point in this sector. Some apps show the monthly and annual price immediately on the website, others hide the price behind the app store or an onboarding questionnaire. An automatically renewing subscription applies to almost all paid ones.
Free does not always mean free. MyFitnessPal moved the barcode scanner behind a paid version. Some apps offer a genuine free version, others only a paid trial period. Finnish-language content is rare and should be checked before subscribing.
Every company is measured with the same public formula across four pillars: technical quality, transparency, reachability and AI quality assessment. A ranking cannot be bought, and you can see the origin of every point on the company's profile. Read the full methodology →
Many apps direct pricing to the app store or an onboarding questionnaire, so the amount in euros is not visible until you create an account or download the app. This is the most common transparency problem in the sector. Some apps, such as MyFitnessPal and Cronometer, show prices directly on the website.
Most apps have a free version, but its content varies. MyFitnessPal, for example, moved the barcode scanner behind paid Premium in 2024. Some services, such as Noom, offer only a paid trial period and no permanent free version.
Yes, almost all paid subscriptions renew automatically. Cancellation is usually done through the platform where the subscription was made, i.e. via Google Play or the App Store. Cancel before the next billing date to avoid a new billing period.
A Finnish-language interface or content is rare in this comparison. Even if an app has a web address that looks Finnish, the page may still load in English. It is worth checking the language from the app store description before ordering.
