About this comparison

We scored 6 online shops for garden machinery on 22 metrics. The most important question for the buyer: are the price, warranty, delivery costs and maintenance service visible before ordering, or does the machine's true total price and the availability of servicing only become clear after the purchase?

A garden machine is a product that needs servicing and is often heavy, so a product's list price alone does not tell its real cost. When choosing an online shop for a lawn mower, robotic lawn mower or chainsaw, what decides, besides the price, is delivery costs, warranty, availability of servicing and return terms. This guide compares how openly Finnish specialist online shops for garden machines state these terms before purchase.

What transparency means in this category

Product prices are shown in the online shop without logging in or a quote request (20), own or authorised servicing and repair service stated (14), warranty or warranty period stated (12), delivery costs or free delivery threshold stated before checkout (12), delivery time stated (e.g. 1-3 working days) (10), breadth of range or brands shown (10), the product can be ordered directly from the online shop (8), right of return or exchange and its terms shown (8), business ID (Y-tunnus) shown (6)

Transparency is 30% of the total points · these metrics make up its 100 points · the full formula and the other pillars

How to read the comparison correctly: Score measures how openly a company publishes its prices, terms and contact details, not what kind of service it gives its customers. Clear differences in points indicate a genuine difference: one states the price immediately, another only after logging in. Close scores should not be read as a ranking order, because every measurement has a margin of variation. The measurement accuracy and the entire calculation formula have been laid open in the methodology.

Customer experience is brought into the assessment separately. We also collect customer feedback and customer experiences about the companies through separate surveys. The results will be added later to the overall assessment, so that the Score tells not only about transparency but also about how customers experience the company's service.

Who is on the list? Included are Finnish specialist web shops for garden machinery that sell lawn mowers, robotic lawn mowers, trimmers, chainsaws and clearing saws, and servicing for them, and that have their own live web shop with consumer prices. Not included are general hardware or department store shops (Prisma, K-Rauta, Bauhaus, Verkkokauppa.com) where garden machinery is just one department. All six are independent companies with different owners.

What do we measure? The comparison concerns an online shop's transparency to the buyer: whether product prices are visible without logging in, whether maintenance and repair service, warranty, delivery costs and delivery time are stated, whether brands and range are displayed, whether an order can be placed directly online and whether return terms and the business ID (Y-tunnus) are shown. We do not measure who has the lowest prices or the widest range, but how openly the shop states its terms and the machine's servicing before purchase. A garden machine needs servicing and is often a heavy product, so the real total price and the availability of servicing are the buyer's most important questions.

Bot or server blocking is a measurement gap. If the online shop was behind a bot or cookie wall, fully rendered with JavaScript or the page did not respond at the time of measurement, it is marked as a measurement gap, not zero. We do not bypass walls.

Expert tips

Frequently asked questions

Is it worth buying garden machinery from a specialist shop or a department store?

A specialist shop often has its own servicing and spare parts for the machines it sells, as well as expert advice on choosing the right device. When a machine is a product that needs servicing, this is an advantage in the long run compared with a general department store, where servicing depends on the manufacturer's network.

How much does garden machine delivery cost?

Small accessories travel as a parcel, but large and heavy machines such as ride-on mowers and snow blowers are delivered as pallet freight, which carries a separate surcharge. Some shops state the delivery cost and the free delivery threshold in euros in advance, others only in the cart, depending on the chosen delivery method.

Can a garden machine be returned?

As a rule, a consumer has a 14-day right of return for an unused product in its original packaging. However, the customer may be left with costs for freight returns of large machines, and, for example, installing electrical parts can void the right of return. Check the shop's own terms before buying.

How does the warranty work for a machine bought online?

Warranties are most often manufacturer-specific, and many brands require the warranty to be registered. The order confirmation often serves as the warranty certificate, so keep it. Some shops state the warranty period openly, others refer only to the manufacturer's warranty.
