We scored 6 online shops for sewing machines and overlockers on 20 metrics: transparency, reachability and content quality. The most important question: can you see the machine's price, technical specifications, warranty and domestic servicing before you enter your payment card details?
A sewing machine and an overlocker are expensive purchases that the consumer cannot try before ordering. That is why the machine's price, technical specifications, warranty length and servicing in Finland must be clearly displayed before purchase. We compared six sewing machine and overlocker webshops by transparency, reachability and content quality.
Price and availability of the machine shown without logging in (25), technical details (stitch count, sewing speed, free arm, embroidery area) on the product page (20), warranty (in years) and domestic servicing or spare parts stated (15), delivery costs and free delivery threshold stated (15), right of return and exchange clearly stated (10), user guidance or training mentioned with the purchase of the machine (5), business ID (Y-tunnus) or responsible company clearly stated (10)
Transparency is 30% of the total points · these metrics make up its 100 points · the full formula and the other pillars
How to read the comparison correctly: Score measures how openly a company publishes its prices, terms and contact details, not what kind of service it gives its customers. Clear differences in points indicate a genuine difference: one states the price immediately, another only after logging in. Close scores should not be read as a ranking order, because every measurement has a margin of variation. The measurement accuracy and the entire calculation formula have been laid open in the methodology.
Customer experience is brought into the assessment separately. We also collect customer feedback and customer experiences about the companies through separate surveys. The results will be added later to the overall assessment, so that the Score tells not only about transparency but also about how customers experience the company's service.
Transparency on a machine's price, specifications, warranty and domestic servicing is a pain point in the industry. A sewing machine is an expensive purchase, so it is important to see the price without logging in, the machine's technical specifications (stitch count, sewing speed, free arm and possible embroidery area) on the product page, the length of the warranty in years, domestic service and spare-parts support, and delivery and return terms. The comparison rewards shops that state these openly.
All six are their own online shops, with machine prices shown in the shopping cart. Ompelukonetukku (Value Trade Oy), Ompelukonenetti (Bellabit Oy), Ompelukoneverkko.fi (Teemu Keränen), Kaartin neule ja ompelukone (Kaartin neule- ja Ompelukone Oy) and Ompelukonekeskus are Finnish, and Marevik is an Estonian Finnish-language online shop. The business ID (Y-tunnus) metric assesses how clearly the responsible company is shown on the shop's pages.
Every company is measured with the same public formula across four pillars: technical quality, transparency, reachability and AI quality assessment. A ranking cannot be bought, and you can see the origin of every point on the company's profile. Read the full methodology →
Consumers must be able to compare machine prices and estimate the total cost before creating an account or entering payment card details. Hiding the price behind a login or a request for quotation weakens transparency.
A sewing machine often lasts for decades in use, so domestic brand servicing and the availability of spare parts affect the machine's lifespan and value. Many specialist shops service the machines they sell themselves.
The key factors are the stitch count and stitch types, sewing speed, free arm and, for an embroidery machine, the embroidery area and the number of embroidery designs. Use these to judge whether the machine is enough for your use without being able to try it.
As a rule, a consumer has a 14-day right of return in an online shop if the machine is in its original condition. The terms and return procedure vary by shop, so it is worth reading them before ordering.
