About this comparison

We compared 6 Finnish FINAS-accredited laboratories that offer well water testing to private individuals. We scored them on 20 metrics: price findability, accreditation, postal sample service, interpretation of results and clarity of packages.

Well water quality can vary significantly between areas and seasons. A FINAS-accredited laboratory guarantees that the results are officially acceptable and comparable against the limit values of the Ministry of Social Affairs and Health (STM).

What transparency means in this category

Prices of testing packages (euros) are clearly displayed on the website or in a downloadable price list without having to make contact (25), the laboratory is FINAS-accredited for household water and well water testing (or an equivalent national accreditation is mentioned on the page) (20), sampling equipment is sent or can be ordered by post to the customer's home address (no mandatory visit to the laboratory) (15), the test certificate includes a written expert statement or interpretation of the results compared with the limit values of the STM (Ministry of Social Affairs and Health) decree (15), turnaround time of results (days from sampling) is stated on the website (10), testing packages of different scope (e.g. narrow/basic/extensive) are named and their content clearly described on the site (10), laboratory contact details (phone and/or e-mail) are clearly found on the home page (5)

Transparency is 30% of the total points · these metrics make up its 100 points · the full formula and the other pillars

How to read the comparison correctly: Score measures how openly a company publishes its prices, terms and contact details, not what kind of service it gives its customers. Clear differences in points indicate a genuine difference: one states the price immediately, another only after logging in. Close scores should not be read as a ranking order, because every measurement has a margin of variation. The measurement accuracy and the entire calculation formula have been laid open in the methodology.

Customer experience is brought into the assessment separately. We also collect customer feedback and customer experiences about the companies through separate surveys. The results will be added later to the overall assessment, so that the Score tells not only about transparency but also about how customers experience the company's service.

What does well water contain? Well water is groundwater into which soil minerals, bacteria or heavy metals can dissolve. According to the STM decree, a basic analysis of well water is recommended every three years and an extensive analysis every six years.

FINAS accreditation. The Finnish national accreditation body FINAS supervises the competence of laboratories. An accredited laboratory meets the requirements of the SFS-EN ISO/IEC 17025 standard and its results are officially acceptable to the authorities.

Postal sample service. Most of the laboratories included in the comparison post sampling kits to your home, so the customer can take the sample themselves and return it to the laboratory. This makes the service usable throughout Finland.

Why these 6 laboratories? From among the Finnish Food Authority's FINAS-accredited laboratories, those with a public price list and a consumer-oriented service were selected for the comparison. Eurofins Ahma, Savo-Karjalan Ympäristötutkimus and SeiLab were excluded because of the lack of a public price list.

Expert tips

Frequently asked questions

How often should well water be tested?

STM recommendation: basic test every three years, extensive test every six years. Also always when commissioning a new well or if the water quality changes.

What does a postal sample service mean?

The laboratory sends sampling equipment (bottles and instructions) by post to your home address. You take the sample yourself, fill in the referral and return the samples to the laboratory. The result is delivered electronically.

What is FINAS accreditation?

FINAS (Finnish Accreditation Service) is Finland's national accreditation body. An accredited laboratory has demonstrated its competence in accordance with the international ISO/IEC 17025 standard. The results of an accredited laboratory are accepted by the authorities.

What does the basic package include?

A basic package usually includes microbiological tests (E. coli, enterococci, coliform bacteria), basic chemical determinations (pH, iron, manganese, oxidisability, hardness) and turbidity. An extended package also tests heavy metals, radon or other regional specifics.
