We scored 6 budgeting and expense-tracking apps aimed at consumers on 20 metrics. The most important question: are the price, free-version limits, bank connection and location of financial data stated clearly before subscribing?
A budgeting app helps you track income and expenses, draw up a budget and work towards savings. Apps differ in whether the price is visible immediately, whether the app fetches transactions automatically from the bank, and where sensitive financial data is stored. We compared consumer-oriented apps from a transparency perspective.
Subscription price in euros or dollars publicly shown without logging in (25), limits of the free version or trial and differences from the paid version stated (15), support for bank connection (PSD2/Open Banking) and its coverage, or lack of it, stated (20), location of financial data (EU or other) and security stated (15), automatic renewal and cancellation of the subscription stated (10), Finnish-language interface or content available (5), operating company or owner stated on the site (10)

How to read the comparison correctly: Score measures how openly a company publishes its prices, terms and contact details, not what kind of service it gives its customers. Clear differences in points indicate a genuine difference: one states the price immediately, another only after logging in. Close scores should not be read as a ranking order, because every measurement has a margin of variation. The measurement accuracy and the entire calculation formula have been laid open in the methodology.
Customer experience is brought into the assessment separately. We also collect customer feedback and customer experiences about the companies through separate surveys. The results will be added later to the overall assessment, so that the Score tells not only about transparency but also about how customers experience the company's service.
All the apps are foreign. No Finnish budgeting app was included in this comparison. The owning company is stated openly for each: American, Czech, Slovenian or British. Some well-known apps in the field (PocketGuard, Monarch, Rocket Money) are not available in Finland, so they could not be measured.
Price and bank connection are the clearest pain points in this industry. Some apps show the monthly and annual price immediately, others hide it behind the app store or logging in. Automatic retrieval of account transactions (PSD2/Open Banking) works only in some, and support for Finnish banks varies from app to app.
Financial data is sensitive. Where your data is stored (EU or United States) and how it is protected should be checked before opening an account. European apps explain GDPR data processing most clearly.
Every company is measured with the same public formula across four pillars: technical quality, transparency, reachability and AI quality assessment. A ranking cannot be bought, and you can see the origin of every point on the company's profile. Read the full methodology →
There was not a single Finnish budgeting app in this comparison. All the measured apps are foreign, and the owning company is stated for each.
Some retrieve data automatically via a PSD2/Open Banking connection, some are manual. Support from Finnish banks varies by app, so it is worth checking.
It depends on the app. European apps usually keep data within the EU and report GDPR processing, whereas for US ones the data is often in the United States.
